Protection of the Weak¶
When the shield is equipped if any creature within 15 feet of you takes damage, you can use your reaction to magically take that damage, instead of that creature taking it. This feature doesn’t transfer any other effects that might accompany the damage, and this damage can’t be reduced in any way. You must declare that you’re taking the damage after a hits been determined but before the damage is known.
Stand Aside¶
As an action the shield can be spiked in to the ground emitting a blast of divine force forward in a 15 foot cone, any creature within this cone must make a Constitution saving throw (equal to your spell save DC) or suffer 4d8 Divine damage and be pushed 10ft. They take half as much damage and aren’t pushed on a save. Once used this cannot be used until the next dawn.
Backstory¶
Adventuring¶
1490 - ???
While repulsing Fire Giant raid at Triboar Gramdoul invoked Berronar Truesilver and accepted her blessing. In a blinding display of her power his mark was removed, a 300ft Mass Healing Word was triggered, and an Earth Elemental was provided for the remainder of the battle. For a number of hours after the event white flowers grew wherever he walked.
While travelling from Triboar To Yartar Gramdoul was visited in his sleep by Berronar Truesilver. She presented herself in an ornate marble Dwarven residence with freshly baked scones. She expressed that Gramdoul was now a Faenor, a chosen individua, and must never besmirch this honor. Later in the conversation Gramdoul was warned of others who would seek to bend him to their will. Berronar Truesilver and even the All Father cannot see how is trying to do this so he must be wary of them himself.
Caravaning¶
1488 - 1490
Having accepted his new path in life and finished basic Cleric training Gramdoul decides it is time to leave Mother’s Bastion. A few days later, having arrived in the city of Mornbryn Shield he has found room and board at a local temple in exchange for healing. Not long after he finds a caravan large enough to take on a cleric and joins them on their trip to Neverwinter.
While travelling the mercenary fighters also employed by the caravan cajole Gramdoul into accepting a light crossbow in case they are overrun. Gramdoul, uncomfortable with the thought of returning to battle, however small eventually gives in.
After joining the coastal road the caravan is swarmed by goblins. During the battle, in a moment of panic, Gramdoul attempts to scramble away from an oncoming goblin, leaving a fellow mercenary to deal with them alone. Tripping over backwards his crossbow accidentally goes off piercing the advancing goblin through the eye and felling them with one shot. Post battle the mercenary he saved thanks Gramdoul for protecting him. Spurred on by the mercenary’s knowing words Gramdoul asks for training with the crossbow.
After arriving at Neverwinter Gramdoul continued to join caravans heading up and down the Sword Coast. Along the way he picked up his trusty shield. While wandering the armourers markets of Waterdeep one day he decided it was time to pick something for closer affairs.
That very evening he ended up in a tavern where he met the other members of his party.
Recovery¶
1486 - 1487
Over the course of the next year Gramdoul is in a feverish coma, barely clinging to life. If it were not for the ministrations of Thorin Torbera and the divine might of Berronar Truesilver he would have been dead within days. However, his wounds were grave and take time to heal.
Finally waking roughly a year after the fall of Nesmé he is still weak and requires constant ministrations from Thorin Torbera. Dazed and confused about his current position his recovery begins to slowly gain speed now he can do basic things like eat. Wracked by guilt and constant disbelief at the loss of his city and its people Gramdoul struggles with the mental strain of his new position in life. Thorin Torbera attempts to council Gramdoul, pushing him to accept Berronar Truesilver’s blessing and become a cleric like himself. Gramdoul, while grateful for his life being saved, struggled to accept the truth about Nesmé and refuses to accept being chosen.
During Gramdoul’s long recovery Nesmé comes under new leadership. A Drow Duke and Duchess, Tiago and Saribel, arrive to try and forge their own dominon with the broken survivors. Orcs stalk the streets, in the employ of the duchy. All remaining citizens, ~600, are press ganged into rebuilding the city. Things do not go well, the citizens now enslaved, are now a broken people. Eventually the Duke and Duchess cut their losses and leave in the dead of the night, leaving slave and enforcer alike.
Six months after waking Gramdoul decides he is well enough to make the journey to Nesmé, despite Thorin Torbera’s protestations. The journey, usually four days without a horse, takes him a little over two weeks. Gramdoul eventually arrives to find a ruined corpse of a city. Only building not destroyed is the duchy estate but even that is long abandoned. Finally seeing the truth in Thorin Torbera’s words about his people Gramdoul makes the trip back to Mother’s Bastion. Upon his return he agrees to learn the ways of a Cleric, seeing no other path for himself.
Over the next 5 months Gramdoul joins in with temple life, helping minister to the sick. He learns the basic spells a Cleric needs along with more mundane medical methods.
The Fall of Nesmé¶
1485 - 1486
During the Fall of Nesmé all remaining citizens were dragged into the conflict. The city was razed by a large group of Orcs backed by a White Dragon. The castle split literally rent in two. During the battle Gramdoul faced off against an Orc and was knocked unconscious. Later that day a wall was destroyed near by, burying him under rubble.
During the next two days the goddess Berronar Truesilver placed her mark on Gramdoul’s chest. This allowed Thorin Torbera to find him despite being hidden under rubble. Thorin Torbera took Gramdoul back to his home, Mother’s Bastion.
Darkening Spreads¶
1484-1485
Unbeknownst among the free cities of the Silver Marches a Drow wizard had started the Darkening. A dark cloud was spreading across the Evermoors. The Drow wizard encouraged the Orcs to push south into the civilised lands and increase their raids. This resulted in the War of the Silver Marches with the once small Clan of the Many Arrows having swollen to a near unstoppable force.
As Field Marshall the defense of Nesmé fell to Gramdoul. Resources began to dwindle as the raids wore the Silver Marches down. With no local aid available Gramdoul was forced to make hard decisions. He stopped sending outrider detachments to root out local pockets of Orcs and pressed all able bodied souls into training.
Via the local ranger network Gramdoul heard of an Orc force marshelling between Nesmé and a neighbour. Seizing the chance to wipe out a significant portion of their force and buy the city some breathing room he sent Thrakkar and a company of riders out. No survivors are known of. During Thrakkar’s absence a party of skilled adventurers arrived in the city. They provided aid for a couple of weeks giving the city a great reprieve from the continual onslaught before moving on to try and liberate Mithrall Hall.
Military Career¶
1372 - 1483
By 1372 the population of Nesmé had been halved due to raids from the Uthgardt. Many were killed in these raids but some left fearing the decreasing safety. Much of Nesmé’s income was ploughed into defences. They gained a reputation for the prowess of their defensive wall that had grown to the height of two trolls. Seeing the state of affairs around the city Gramdoul and Thrakkar joined the military, The Riders of Nesmé.
Both faired well in their careers rising through the ranks until Gramdoul reached the position of Field Marshall and Thrakkar First Rider.
