Pheszeltan’s Lair

A vast tree, 50ft wide, dead straight, extending up beyond sight into the sky in the The Forgotten Forest. Home to Pheszeltan.

Rooms extend into the branches of the tree.

It has a large atrium, with window looking out over the forest far below. A long wooden pier extends out under the window with a dining table on it, where Pheszeltan dined with us and answered our questions.

Rooms extend from the atrium into the branches.

Gaining Access to the Lair Itself

A blocked archway has a sign above reading “Speak your name and enter”. Speaking your name allows entry, but only for you. Once through the archway there is no sign of it on the other side.

The archway leads to a chamber with three plinths. A sign under them all reads “How will you show your wisdom?” Behind the plinths are 3 corresponding archways, blocked like the entrance to the chamber was outside.

The plinths have on top of them:

  • An open, empty chest

  • A muscled arm, holding a sword

  • A story book, open with a bookmark and empty pages

Picking up the contents of a plinth activates the archway behind. Picking up more than one item deactivates all the archways.

We picked the arm and sword, stepping through into a large, mahogany panelled library. There are two floors, and an inner, gated sanctum at the far end.

The shelves are packed with outdated, not-especially-useful books. Topics include:

  • the shipping lanes between two cities

  • weather forecasts

Inside the inner sanctum a whirlwind of books attacked us, and lightning bolts from the inner stacks shocked us. After defeating the whirlwind a Scroll of Teleportation was dropped (along with a Tome of Intelligence). This scroll telelported us to the main lair.
